Mannheim Innovation Panel: Innovation Activities of Enterprises in Germany
Mannheim Innovation Panel: Innovation Activities of Enterprises in Germany
The Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) has been collecting data on innovation activities of the German enterprise sector since 1993 on an annual basis through a representative survey. The innovation survey is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and conducted in co-operation with infas (Institute of Applied Social Science) and the Fraunhofer Institute for System and Innovation Research (ISI). The survey is based on a stratified random sample of firms with 5 or more employees in the production sector and in business-oriented services. The annual innovation survey is designed as a panel survey, i.e. the sample consists of the same enterprises every year. Every two years the sample is refreshed in order to substitute for enterprises which ceased business or moved outside the core population of the survey.
The Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP) provides information on the introduction of new products, services and processes, the expenditures for innovations and the economic returns obtained from innovation. In addition, the survey informs about the factors that promote or hinder innovation activities. The MIP data have been an important source both for academic research and policy analysis.
MIP micro-data can be accessed by the scientific community in two ways. A Scientific Use File provides anonymised micro-data for scientific, non-commercial purposes. This data set can be used by researchers at their research facilities. Original micro-data can be access at ZEW’s Research Data Centre. In addition, an Education Use File can be used by university teachers. In order to facilitate exchange among researchers, ZEW regularly organises scientific conferences in the field of innovation economics.
Innovation survey results are published through various channels:
- More than 150 ZEW Discussion Papers present research results based MIP data.
- More than 200 articles by ZEW staff or external users based on MIP data have been published in refereed journals.
- Annual Indicator and Background Reports provide a summary of main results in the field of innovation statistics.
- Results on innovation indicators for individual sectors are presented in Sector Reports on Innovation.
- MIP data have also been widely used for several innovation policy reports and reviews.
