NEWS 27.03.2012 Study on Corporate Tax Rates: A Comparison of Germany and the EU: Regarding the effective tax burden of companies, Germany ranks 21st among the 27 EU countries. Only six EU member states raise higher corporate taxes than Germany. Even though fiscal reforms were passed in 2008, there is still a need for reforms in the German tax system. These are the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in cooperation with the University of Mannheim on behalf of the Foundation for Family Businesses. In this connection, the 'debt brakes' already in place in Germany and Switzerland have been serving as a guide for the writing of legislation in various member states. Yet how effective has Germany's deficit reduction legislation been? And does it contain loopholes? To address these questions, it is necessary to draw a distinction between Germany's federal government and states. Thus, the indicator has risen for the fourth consecutive time. It displays its highest level since June 2010. The further increase of economic sentiment confirms the positive outlook for the economic situation in Germany. Good industrial production data for January apparently convince financial market experts that the recent slowdown of growth dynamics will not seriously affect the generally robust economic situation in Germany. They spend more than 8.7 million euros per year for the management and administration of EU ETS, which equals an average financial burden of 10,000 euros per company and year. Costs are especially high for small firms which emit less than 25,000 tons of CO2 per year. Compared with larger emitters, their costs per ton of CO2 are ten times higher. To eliminate this inequality, small emitters could be excluded from the EU ETS and could be given other incentives to reduce their CO2 emissions. This is the result of a recent study by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, Germany.
