The objective of the research project is to identify possible critical reciprocal effects between energy policy and social policy. In addition to the distributional effects of energy policy, the project also examines fairness aspects and the public acceptance of the transition to renewable energy sources. ZEW launched the research project "Sociopolitical Impact of the German Energy Transition" (Sozialpolitische Konsequenzen der Energiewende in Deutschland) on August 1, 2013. Workshop on "The Impact of Human Resource Management - Empirical Analyses of Firms and Employees" (November 22-23, 2013): The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) is pleased to announce a workshop on the impact of Human Resource Management in Mannheim on November 22 and 23, 2013. Demographic and technological change constitutes novel challenges for employers. Human Resource Management is expected to increase employee productivity, motivation, and retention. Therefore, the introduction of new Human Resource Management practices to recruit, train, retain and motivate employees seems critical. The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers working in the field of personnel and labour economics to discuss the impact of Human Resource Management on firms and employees. We seek high-quality academic work that enriches our understanding in topics such as recruitment strategies and hiring, personnel development, further training and life-long learning, compensation systems, flexible working time systems, age-specific work systems, and family-friendly work practices. Theoretical and empirical contributions are welcome. Please submit the full paper or an extended abstract as PDF file to hrm2013 at zew.de no later than September 15, 2013. Additional information and Call for Papers: http://www.zew.de/hrm2013 3. STAFF 3.1. PRESS RELEASES 20.08.2013 - ZEW (joh/ggr) Information Economy - More and More People Are Able to Work Outside the Office: Location-independent working is on the rise. Thanks to modern communication technologies, an increasing number of people are able to carry their work with them wherever they go, allowing them to be of service to their clients, colleagues and superiors no matter where they are. A representative business survey in the information economy concluded by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) shows that such statements are no longer visions, but have become real. The ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for the CEE region now stands at a level of 33.3 points. Among the individual CEE countries, almost all indicators reflecting economic expectations except those for Poland and Hungary displayed a slight increase in this month's survey. The ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for Central and Eastern Europe reflects the financial market experts' expectations for the CEE region on a six-month time horizon. The indicator has been compiled on a monthly basis together with further financial market data by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim with the support of Erste Group Bank, Vienna, since 2007. Accordingly, the ZEW-CS Indicator of economic expectations now stands at 7.2 points. This could be a first indication that economic expectations might slide over to a gentle upward trend after three consecutive months on a stable level. The ZEW-CS Indicator is calculated monthly by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in cooperation with Credit Suisse (CS). The indicator reflects the expectations of the surveyed financial market experts regarding the economic development in Switzerland on a six-month time horizon. The indicator now stands at the 42.0-points mark (historical average: 23.7 points). This is the highest mark since March 2013. First signs of an end to the recession in important eurozone countries may have contributed to the indicator's rise. A recent study conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has verified this correlation. Comparing the three-year periods before and after a cartel breakdown in various economic sectors, the worldwide number of mergers increases by up to 51 per cent after a collapse. In the three years preceding cartel collapses, the branches observed in the study recorded 696 company mergers worldwide. In the three years after the breakdowns, however, 1,052 mergers were realised. If the sample is narrowed down to horizontal mergers only, i.e. mergers between companies in the same industry operating on the same production stage, the number of mergers worldwide increases by as much as 83 per cent (from 196 to 359 mergers worldwide). The ZEW-ZEPHYR M&A Index reflects the completed mergers and acquisitions worldwide. Its current downturn has started in mid-2011. In Germany, by contrast, the situation is different: here, the number of mergers and acquisitions had already bottomed out in 2011. Meanwhile, a glimmer of hope has emerged for the worldwide M&A activities: the number of rumours about future deals circulating on the market has increased significantly. These are the results of calculations by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) based on the database of Bureau van Dijk (BvD). Instead, improving cost-efficiency in terms of energy supply and energy use would be a starting point to mitigate growing energy costs and to promote climate protection. These are the findings of the ZEW Energy Market Barometer, a semi-annual survey among some 200 experts from the energy economy conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW).
