NEWS 24.10.2013 SEEK Closing Workshop on Corporate Social Responsibility and Credit Costs: The closing workshop of the SEEK project "Corporate Social Responsibility and Credit Costs" took place at ZEW on September 16, 2013. The international workshop was organised in the framework of the "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies" (SEEK) research programme by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and project partners in Mannheim. They presented and discussed the project results. At the workshop, the new network "European Responsible Investments & Institutions Conference" (ERIIC) was founded. The network will particularly address research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and finance. One objective of the network is the realisation of an annual conference on this topic. The major international conference will be organised on a rotational basis in Groningen, Hamburg, Maastricht, Mannheim, Navarra, Paris, and Reading. The call for papers for the first conference in autumn 2014 will be published shortly. Additional information on the SEEK workshop and the programme: http://www.zew.de/event1838 23.10.2013 2013 Expertise "Economic Factor Real Estate" (Wirtschaftsfaktor Immobilien) Published: The real estate sector is and will be an important anchor of stability for the German economy. The stable growth of the branch has contributed substantially to the quick recovery after the economic slump. This is one of the numerous facts presented in the new edition of the expertise "Economic Factor Real Estate" on the overall economic role of the real estate sector in Germany. The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) framed the expertise in collaboration with the Cologne Institute for Economic Research and the International Real Estate Business School (IREBS) of the University of Regensburg on behalf of Deutscher Verband fuer Wohnungswesen, Staedtebau und Raumordnung e.V. (DV) and the Society of Property Researchers. Starting from this fact, a group of eleven German economists, lawyers, and political scientists has drafted a thought-provoking essay on a new and crisis-proof architecture for the eurozone. ZEW's president Prof. Dr. Clemens Fuest is a member of this group. The Glienicker Group, which is named after the place of its first meeting, published an abridged version of its proposals in an article for the German weekly DIE ZEIT on October 17, 2013. ZEW researchers Dr. Michael Huebler and Dr. Oliver Schenker jointly hosted the workshop with Carolyn Fischer, PhD, from Resources for the Future (RFF). RFF is a SEEK project partner and a renowned research institution for environmental economics and policy in Washington, D.C. Together with Prof. Sjak Smulders (Tilburg University), Taran Faehn (Statistics Norway), Prof. Sourafel Girma (University of Nottingham), and Antoine Dechezlepretre, PhD, (London School of Economics and Political Science), the project team presented and discussed inspiring research results and their relevance to climate policy as well as technology and competitiveness. Moreover, the workshop participants explored options for future co-operation. Additional information on the SEEK project: http://www.zew.de/project1202 08.10.2013 Joint Conference on "The Single Resolution Mechanism and the Limits of Bank Regulation" (Berlin, November 8, 2013): The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, the Financial Risk and Stability Network, and the Institute for Banking and Capital Market Law at Humboldt-University host the conference titled "The Single Resolution Mechanism and the Limits of Bank Regulation" in Berlin on November 8, 2013. A key element of the EU Banking Union has entered the political agenda: the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM). The new mechanism will affect complicated and sensitive legal, regulatory and political issues. Severe questions concerning the SRM's legitimacy, institutional setting, funding, and political impact have yet to be answered. This conference brings together researchers, politicians, and banking experts to discuss the design of the resolution authority, the impact of regulatory policy, and the responsibility of financial institutions. The conference will be held mainly in English. The event is fully booked. Changes to Germany's Working Culture Would Help Women to Advance to Leadership Positions: At German companies women remain underrepresented in upper management. ZEW labour market expert Melanie Arntz explains why a legally mandated women's quota could help to improve equality of opportunity for women. They are highly indebted from living beyond their means for many years; their home is freshly painted but run down on the inside, and the repairs needed are expensive; to boot, the couple has no savings for retirement. But then, unexpectedly, they win 50,000 euros from playing the lottery. This is not enough to eliminate their financial problems, but still a tidy sum. What advice would we give them? Clearly, we would recommend paying off some of their debt rather than spend their winnings on new consumer goods. Read more: http://www.zew.de/news2416 2. CALL FOR PAPERS 2.1. Experts recommend further investment in high-quality child care, but advise against increasing child benefits. The German government has been spending about 200 billion euros per year on marriage- and family-related benefits without systematically monitoring the effectiveness of the numerous instruments and examining their interplay. The overall evaluation of these benefits commissioned in 2009 by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) and the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) is the first attempt at a comprehensive impact assessment. Experts expect slightly increasing freight volumes in the coming six months, which is likely to open room for price increases in freight transport. The experts expect only moderate price increases because fuel costs remain largely stable. These are the results of the ProgTrans/ZEW Transport Market Barometer in the third quarter of 2013. In this survey, ProgTrans AG, Basel, and the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim interview some 250 top executives from the transport and loading industry on a quarterly basis about their assessment regarding the development of transport markets and prices on a six-month horizon.
