PRESS RELEASES 23.01.2014 - ZEW (zli/kbo) ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) - Economic Expectations for the CEE Region Decline: In January 2014, economic expectations for Central and Eastern Europe including Turkey (CEE region) have dropped by 17.6 points. The ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for the CEE region now stands at 19.9 points, its lowest level since December 2012. Among the individual CEE countries the highest decline is observed for the economic expectations for Turkey. The respective indicator has lost 40.9 points in January and now stands at its third-lowest level ever (minus 37.5 points). The negative result for Turkey mirrors an increased uncertainty triggered by the corruption scandal in Turkey uncovered at the end of 2013. Compared to last month's reading, this means only a slight decrease of the ZEW-CS Indicator by 3.0 points. Therefore, the current change should rather be considered as a sideward movement of the indicator, which continues to hover at a high level and thereby sets a positive signal for Switzerland's economic development. In January 2014 the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment has decreased only marginally by 0.3 points and now stands at the 61.7-points mark (historical average: 24.4 points). "For months, the surveyed financial market experts have expected an economic upswing. In this month's survey the clearly improved assessment of the current economic situation seems to confirm these expectations," says ZEW President Prof. Dr. Clemens Fuest. This is reflected in the ZEW Sentiment Indicator for the Information Economy, which has reached a total of 64.5 points in the fourth quarter of 2013. Even though it has dropped by 1.8 points compared to the previous quarter, it is still well above the crucial 50-points mark. A value below that mark signals a worsening economic sentiment. The slight setback, which is the first in more than a year, can be attributed to an unfavourable development of business expectations for the first quarter of 2014. The corresponding sub-indicator has lost 6.1 points and now stands at 60.8 points. By contrast, the sub-indicator of the business situation in the fourth quarter of 2013 has increased to 68.6 points - most probably due to the year-end business. These are the findings of a survey conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in the information economy sector in December 2013. Having reached an impressive value of EUR 137.4 billion in 2012, the expenditures on innovation of the German economy will increase by 3.7 per cent in 2013, thus reaching EUR 142.6 billion. A further increase of innovation budgets by 3.0 per cent to EUR 146.9 billion is planned for 2014. These are the findings of the current German Innovation Survey, which was carried out in spring and summer of 2013. For this survey, more than 16,100 enterprises from the industry and services sector were asked about their actual and planned expenditures on innovations. The survey is carried out annually by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research as well as the infas Institute for Applied Social Sciences on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This is an important contribution to climate protection. In some countries, including large economies like the United States and Japan, energy efficiency improvements are in particular the result of a shift towards less energy-intensive production sectors. However, in most countries, including Germany, China, Canada, France and India, improvements in technology were a major factor in this positive development. According to a current study carried out by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, increasing energy efficiency is a key element of climate protection policy. The CEP Indicator captures the expectations of financial market experts regarding the economic development in China over the course of the next twelve months. Still, more than 67 per cent of the surveyed experts assume economic conditions to improve further. Stocks as a capital investment are likewise expected to become less attractive. By contrast, raw materials are gaining importance as investment opportunities, while the attractiveness of foreign currencies and real estate remains largely unchanged in 2014. Investors are thus expected to place a greater focus on raw materials in their investment portfolios in the coming year. These are the findings of the special question on the "Attractiveness of different asset classes in 2014" in the current ZEW Financial Market Survey. 217 financial market experts participated in the December 2013 survey.
