Fewer and fewer contributors are paying into the pensions of more and more retirees. To keep costs in check, the government has passed a series of reforms over the past two decades cutting pension benefits. One reform introduced a demographic factor to the pension formula. Another reform, passed by Germany's previous grand coalition, provides for the standard retirement age to be increased gradually and reach 67 years in 2030. While pension contributions will rise in coming years, the reforms will slow the pace considerably. PRESS RELEASES 24.02.2014 - ZEW/TNS Infratest (ggr/ibe/joh) ICT Sector Continues to Grow: The ICT sector is the secret star performer in the German business and industry sector. When it comes to added value, the ICT sector ranks ahead of the traditional mechanical engineering and automobile manufacturing industries and captures the top of the list. According to calculations based on the latest available figures of the Federal Statistical Office, the ICT sector contributed 4.7 per cent to the total value added of the business and industry sector in Germany, and generated almost EUR 85 billion in 2011. Compared to the previous year, the performance of the ICT sector has again improved. These are the findings of the study "Monitoring the German Information and Communication Economy" carried out by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in collaboration with TNS Infratest on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). The ZEW-CS Indicator has decreased by 7.7 points compared to the previous month. The weaker economic outlook is likely caused by the approval of the national referendum to stop mass immigration, which could impact employment, investments, and the general attractiveness of Switzerland as a business location. Many processes are automated and connected using control software. This creates a risk for companies in the energy economy to be attacked by hackers; software errors or computer viruses can cause large-scale power blackouts. Germany's major power supply facilities, however, seem to be well or at least sufficiently protected from IT errors and cyber attacks. This view is maintained by the majority of the approximately 170 energy market experts from science and business surveyed by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) for the semi-annual Energy Market Barometer.
