NEWS 20.03.2014 ZEW Launches new Series of Events in Brussels: The new series ZEW Lunch Debates was met with great response in Brussels. The opening speech by EU Commissioner Guenther H. Oettinger as well as the following panel discussion with distinguished speakers addressed the topic "Post 2020 Energy and Climate Protection Targets". ZEW President Prof. Clemens Fuest welcomed about 120 participants from the European Commission and the European Parliament as well as industry associations, companies, research institutions and non-governmental organisations to the first ZEW Lunch Debate in Brussels on March 18, 2014. The kick-off event of this new ZEW series addressed an environmental economics topic: "Post 2020 Energy and Climate Protection Targets". This is the result of a survey conducted for the 2013 KfW/ZEW CO2 Barometer - Manufacturing Industry Edition. Half of the participating companies consider the grid expansion to be the major challenge of the energy transition, followed by renewable energy and energy efficiency targets. Andreas Peichl, head of the new ZEW Research Group "International Distribution and Redistribution", argues that Germany's tax-transfer system exhibits good performance relative to other countries. "Victory for the ECB" read the first headlines in the Financial Times. Initially it looked as though the court had delegated the decision on the OMT's future to an amenable European Court of Justice (ECJ). Yet this is wrong. The German judges accuse the ECB of overstepping its mandate, and they dismiss the argument that the OMT is legitimate because it ensures that monetary policy works well. They also reject the idea that it is the job of monetary policy to avert euro exit. The ruling considers the OMT bond-buying scheme to be tantamount to ESM aid without parliamentary legitimation and control. Compared to the previous quarter, however, the index has decreased by five points. This can be equally attributed to the slight slowdown in the improvement in the financing situation as well as to the financing expectations. These are the key findings of the quarterly ZEW survey among real estate market experts concerning the real estate financing market in Germany. 38 experts participated in the survey in January and February 2014. The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment has decreased by 9.1 points and now stands at a level of 46.6 points (historical average: 24.6 points). The price development is rather inconsistent. Some transport sectors expect price increases whereas others foresee slightly lower prices. These are the results of the ProgTrans/ZEW-TransportmarktBarometer (Transport Market Barometer) in the first quarter of 2014. In this quarterly survey, ProgTrans AG in Basel, CH, and the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim survey some 250 top executives from the transport and loading industry about their assessment regarding the development of transport markets and prices on a six-month horizon. The use of mobile devices such as notebooks, tablets and smartphones is making work increasingly independent from the workplace. This development enables firms to retain highly qualified staff by offering flexible job models and working hours that can be adapted to the individual needs of employees. Furthermore, it improves the reconciliation of work and family life - if implemented with a sense of proportion. However, a representative nation-wide business survey conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) suggests that flexible working models are still limited to a rather small group of employees. The survey was conducted within the framework of the Monitoring Digital Economy study carried out by ZEW and TNS Infratest on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). The CEP Indicator captures the expectations of financial market experts regarding the economic development in China over the course of the next twelve months.
