The widely-attended event, which is organised by the American Economic Association, is the world's most important conference for economists. As in the previous year, ZEW researchers will take this excellent opportunity to strengthen their international networks. Between the scientific sessions at the conference, the participants are invited to pay the ZEW stand a visit, which provides comprehensive information on the institute, cooperation opportunities and research stays in Mannheim. The ZEW human resources department will conduct job interviews with international researchers at the ASSA job market. 15.12.2014 - ZEW (fkr/ybr(Video)) First-Hand Information on Economic Policy at ZEW - Telekom Chief Executive Officer Timotheus Hoettges: "Industry 4.0 Creates Growth Opportunities in Europe": Timotheus Hoettges, Chief Executive Officer at Deutsche Telekom AG, expects "Industry 4.0" to become the major driver of economic growth in Germany and Europe. "Everything that can be digitalised will be digitalised," Hoettges said with regard to the merging of traditional industrial production with information and communication technologies. Hoettges delivered his lecture entitled "Die Vernetzung der Welt - Chancen und Herausforderungen der Digitalisierung" (Worldwide Networking - The Opportunities and Challenges of Digitalisation) in front of some 200 guests at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) within the series "First-Hand Information on Economic Policy". He focused on the failures associated with the implementation of Industry 4.0 as well as future prospects. Setting the course for the 2015 conference in Paris, where the 1997 Kyoto Protocol is to be renewed, will probably take a lot more time. Acting head of the ZEW Research Department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management", Dr. Klaus Rennings, and acting deputy Dr. Oliver Schenker comment on the current state of negotiations. Both researchers emphasise that repeated games are being played in Lima. The increase of 4.7 points is exclusively attributable to a further improvement of the financing situation's evaluation: The corresponding sub-indicator has increased by 10.0 points to 50.8 points. A slight decline in financing expectations by 0.6 to 7.0 points accompanies the strong growth. This opposite trend has already been observed over the past two quarters. Further information and the current DIFI Report: http://www.zew.de/en/news/2828 26.11.2014 - ZEW (cfu) Luxembourg's Tax Tricks and Tax Competition in Europe: Public debate concerning Luxembourg and its tax tricks has focused first and foremost on the individual responsibility of Jean-Claude Juncker. This was perhaps to be expected. Yet there is a danger that the personalisation of the debate will divert attention from the true issue at hand: namely, what tax rules should apply in Europe to ensure fair and efficient taxation? Luxembourg has granted individual companies preferential tax rates for certain types of revenues, such as foreign brand and patent royalties. While this was not publicly known until recently, it creates three problems. Read the complete opinion piece: http://www.zew.de/en/news/2815 2. CALL FOR PAPERS 2.1. In the current survey the ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for the CEE region has gained 18.0 points and reaches a level of 30.5 points. Economic expectations have improved for almost all individual countries except for Hungary and Turkey. The ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for Central and Eastern Europe reflects the financial market experts' expectations for the CEE region on a six-month time horizon. The indicator has been compiled on a monthly basis together with further financial market data by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim with the support of Erste Group Bank, Vienna, since 2007. The indicator has improved from minus 7.6 to minus 4.9 points. The surveyed analysts therefore seem to expect only a slight slowdown of the Swiss economy in the first six months of 2015. The ZEW-CS Indicator reflects the expectations of the surveyed financial market experts regarding the economic development in Switzerland on a six-month time horizon. It is calculated monthly by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, in cooperation with Credit Suisse (CS), Zurich. Increasing for the second consecutive time, the index now stands at 34.9 points (long-term average: 24.4 points), the highest reading since May 2014. "Confidence in the German economy seems to be slowly returning among the financial market experts surveyed by ZEW. This increase is related to favourable economic conditions such as the weak euro and the low crude oil price. The recently published German export figures already show a positive trend. However, we should be aware that the current optimism is fuelled by factors that might change even over the short term," ZEW President Professor Clemens Fuest says. The past six months were characterised by uncertainty about the consequences of the Ukraine crisis, particularly regarding transportation to Eastern Europe. This negative climate has now spread to nearly all transport sectors and traffics. Regarding transport prices, experts expect a heterogeneous development. These are the key findings of the Prognos/ZEW Transportmarktbarometer (Transport Market Barometer) in the fourth quarter of 2014. In this quarterly survey, Prognos AG, Basel, and the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) survey some 250 top executives from the transport and loading industry about their assessment regarding the development of transport markets and prices on a six-month horizon. In the meantime, this trend has become consolidated: M&A activities have notably picked up pace. The ZEW-ZEPHYR M&A Index has increased accordingly. These are the findings of calculations by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) based on the Zephyr database of Bureau van Dijk (BvD). In August 2013, the ZEW-ZEPHYR M&A Index Germany was at a rather low level of 50 points. Within just one year, until August 2014, the index increased by about 75 per cent to the total of 87.5 points. Even though several of the previous months were characterised by a large number of mergers and acquisitions, these outliers were barely reflected in the twelve-month moving average of the ZEW-ZEPHYR M&A Index. That has changed now. A reform package that addresses the issue of excessive legacy debt, missing tax autonomy for the federal states, and simplifications to the fiscal equalisation scheme would make German federalism sustainable. This is the result of a study conducted by ZEW on behalf of the Konvent fuer Deutschland, an independent cross-party group of policy advisors. "An independent right of the federal states to set taxes would mean more democracy," Friedrich Heinemann says. Heinemann is head of the Research Department "Corporate Taxation and Public Finance" at ZEW and author of the study. Automatic tax increases are therefore undesirable, because they are beyond the democratic control of the opposition and the public. However, this is exactly the case with the bracket creep within the context of income tax collection in Germany. This creeping tax increase amounts to billions of euros for the treasury every year. The switch to a "tariff on wheels" is therefore imperative, according to Lars P. Feld, president of the Walter Eucken Institute, Clemens Fuest, president of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), and Christoph M. Schmidt, president of RWI (Rheinisch-Westfaelisches Institut fuer Wirtschaftsforschung). Feld, Fuest, and Schmidt make their case in an article published in the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" on December 1, 2014. Read more: http://www.zew.de/en/press/2819 5.
