Together with ZEW and the University of Mannheim, MaTax organised the second international annual MaTax conference on taxation research, which took place on October 1 and 2, 2015. What had been only a political dream became a reality. However, from that time until now, economists' projections for the future of a unified Germany have diverged widely, depending on their point of view and location. Why are we still left waiting for the full convergence of East and West? ZEW financial expert Friedrich Heinemann explains what ails the East German economy, its particular opportunities, and the potential importance of immigration for its future growth. As many as one million migrants are expected to arrive this year, and next year could see a similar number. Whilst the economic cycle in Germany becomes increasingly stable, countries such as Greece and Portugal are still facing the effects of national debt crises. This year's annual SEEK conference, held by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) from 8 to 9 October in Mannheim, was thus entitled "Overcoming the Crisis: How to Foster Innovation and Entrepreneurship in a Diverging European Economy?". Participants considered how investments in innovation and entrepreneurship might help to close the growing gap between the various European national economies. On the first day of the conference, high-profile speakers from the fields of politics and economics discussed the main areas, on which policy made in Brussels may draw, in order to actively promote innovation in Europe. Speakers included Peter Praet, Chief Economist of the European Central Bank (ECB), and Mario Monti, former Prime Minister of Italy. Read more and watch the video: http://www.zew.de/en/news/3155 2. PRESS RELEASES 28.10.2015 - ZEW (wbg/jpr) M&A Report - Concentration in European Landline Communications Network Increasing: For years, a significant trend towards consolidation has been observed in the landline communication (fixed-link) market in Europe. The number of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) continues to fall and has recently reached its lowest level since 2003. In the last two years, however, there has been a massive increase in the aggregated volume of transactions, as it is principally larger firms which are now merging with one another. These are the findings of an analysis carried out by the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) on the basis of the Zephyr database of Bureau van Dijk (BvD). The number of M&As has stagnated, however. As a result, the ZEW-ZEPHYR M&A Index has shown little variation in 2015. This is the finding of an analysis carried out by the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) on the basis of the Zephyr database of Bureau van Dijk (BvD). The majority of companies positively assess both their current business situation and the economic outlook for the fourth quarter of 2015, as suggested by the ZEW Economic Sentiment Indicator. The indicator has climbed by 0.7 points quarter-on-quarter to a reading of 64.4 points. This is the result of a survey conducted by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in September 2015 within the information economy. There is, however, also a positive impact on children's performance at school. This is shown by a study carried out by the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in cooperation with Alina Botezat, researcher at Gh. Zane Institute of Economic and Social Research at the Romanian Academy in Iasi. The study uses data from a representative survey carried out amongst children and young people living in Romania, a country with high levels of emigration. In the current survey, the ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for the CEE region has decreased by 7.7 points and has now crossed the 0.0 mark reaching a level of minus 0.1 points. The ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for Central and Eastern Europe reflects financial market experts' expectations for the CEE region on a six-month time horizon. The indicator has been compiled on a monthly basis together with further financial market data by the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) with the support of Erste Group Bank, Vienna, since 2007. It rises by 8.6 points to a reading of 18.3 points, its highest level since March 2014. In this month's survey only 13 percent of all the respondents expect the economic development in Switzerland to deteriorate further, 55 percent foresee no major changes and 32 percent anticipate an improvement. The ZEW-CS Indicator reflects the expectations of the surveyed financial market experts regarding the economic development in Switzerland on a six-month time horizon. It is calculated on a monthly basis by the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in cooperation with Credit Suisse (CS), Zurich. Decreasing by 10.2 points compared to the previous month, the index now stands at a level of 1.9 points (long-term average: 24.8 points). "The exhaust gas scandal of Volkswagen and the weak growth of emerging markets has dampened the economic outlook for Germany. However, the performance of the domestic economy is still good and the Euro area economy continues to recover. This makes it rather unlikely that the German economy will slide into recession," says ZEW President Professor Clemens Fuest. This is the case at both ends of the income scale, depending on the type of data used. This is the finding of a study carried out in cooperation between the Centre for European Economics Research (ZEW), Mannheim, and the Macroeconomic Policy Institute (Institut fuer Makrooekonomie und Konjunkturforschung, IMK) at the Hans-Boeckler Foundation, Duesseldorf. It is above all the availability of administrative data, which is less than ideal, and which renders it extremely difficult to provide sound measurements of developments in income inequality. From a research perspective, this is a clear shortcoming, which is why researchers are now requesting access to better data from state sources. The CEP Indicator, which reflects the expectations of international financial market experts regarding China's macroeconomic development over the coming twelve months, has deteriorated significantly in the current survey period (14/09 - 28/09/2015), falling from minus 6.0 to minus 9.7 points. The GDP forecasts for 2015 total 6.8 per cent, whilst these fall to 6.6 per cent for 2016. Particularly in road freight, a downward price trend is to be expected. Things are much more varied, however, when it comes to transport volumes. While experts forecast increases in transport volumes for road freight and courier, express and package services (CEP) in Germany in the next six months, volumes are expected to stagnate for rail freight and inland shipping. The outlook for air freight, which up to now has been rather positive, has also worsened. A special survey regarding the GDL train drivers' strike indicates that the strike has not only cost Deutsche Bahn market shares, but that the company has also suffered damage to its image. These are the key findings of the Prognos/ZEW TransportmarktBarometer (Transport Market Barometer) carried out in the third quarter of 2015. In this quarterly survey, Prognos AG, Basel, and the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) survey some 250 top executives from the transport and loading industry about their expectations for the development of transport volumes and prices on a six-month horizon.
