Politics of Favoritism and Its Economic Implications

Development economists will meet online on 4 February 2021 to discuss issues related to political economy dimension of development in Africa. One set of papers will discuss the origins of favoritist politics along ethnic, religious and regional dimensions. A second set of papers will focus on the economic implication created by these political distortions, in particular, by studying the effects on intergenerational mobility, human capital, and productivity. The program features papers using both theoretical and applied methods, the latter ones particularly making heavy use of spatial techniques for inference.

This workshop is co-organized by Zareh Asatryan and Thushyanthan Baskaran within their joint DFG project on Regional Favoritism and Development.
