The Data Economy: Threats and Opportunities

Is data the "new oil" or the "currency of the future"? Sceptics and supporters agree on one thing: data is an essential resource for innovation, job creation, economic growth, competitiveness and social progress in general.

Should data be accessible to and reusable by all stakeholders? There is a general consensus that regulatory bodies need to ensure that data is able to flow across borders and sectors. However, opinions diverge as to how governments should be involved in the new data marketplace. Critical questions include: What are the current barriers to data flows? What framework conditions are needed for a thriving data economy in Europe in which companies of all sectors can build on the opportunities offered by data-driven innovation? How can regulatory bodies ensure fair access for consumers and businesses to digital goods and services across Europe whilst also protecting personal data?

ZEW’s high-profile event will discuss first-hand insights by bringing together representatives of online platforms, academia and politics.
