Effects of the National Minimum Wage on Self-Employment
Effects of the National Minimum Wage on Self-Employment
Period:
01.12.2018 – 03.06.2020
The aim of this project was to investigate whether the introduction of the federal minimum wage in Germany in 2015 causally effected self-employment. The project was conducted using data on self-employment from the Mannheim Enterprise Panel (MUP) and data on the “bite” of the minimum wage in different regions and sectors provided by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). The project’s results point to a reduction in self-employment in Germany caused by the introduction of the federal minimum wage.
