ZEW Strongly Represented at EEA-ESEM 2018 in Cologne

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) presented itself successfully at this year’s 33rd Annual Congress of the European Economic Association (EEA), which took place at the University of Cologne from 27 to 31 August and ran in parallel with the 71st Annual European Meeting of the Econometric Society (ESEM). During the five-day event, ZEW researchers held a total of seven talks and lectures, during which they presented their latest research findings relating to labour markets, market design and corporate taxation.

The topics of these talks include the effects of a rising number of asylum seekers on crime rates, the influence of administrative border reforms at the subnational level on the local economy, as well as the behaviour of bidders in a first-price sealed-bid auction in which they have limited information on the bids of other participants. In addition to the presentations, ZEW also hosted an information stand at the congress where participants had the opportunity to catch up on career, collaboration and training possibilities at ZEW, and where they were informed about the institute’s latest research findings.

The list of more than 1,400 participants who attended the 2018 EEA-ESEM included leading international researchers as well as members of the executive board of the ECB and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Besides the Italian economist and EEA President Professor Eliana La Ferrara, her German colleague, Professor Isabel Schnabel from the University of Bonn, Professor Enrique G. Mendoza, Director of the Penn Institute for Economic Research at the University of Pennsylvania, Linda Goldberg, Senior Vice President in the Financial Intermediation Function at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Professor Matthew Gentzkow from Stanford University, and Peter Praet, member of the executive board of the ECB, attended the event.

The EEA currently has more than 3,000 members and publishes the renowned Journal of the European Economic Association (JEEA) six times per year. The annual congress regularly provides a platform for discussion and the exchange of ideas in the field of economics. ZEW will participate again at next year’s EEA-ESEM Annual Congress, which is set to take place at the University of Manchester. This year, the EEA will also launch the first European Job Market on 6 and 7 December 2018 in Naples, Italy, where ZEW will also be represented.
