New Branch of State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg Established at ZEW

As of July 2018, researchers using German official statistics data for their research projects are able to access these data at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg has established a workplace for visiting researchers that can be used to analyse official data for the purpose of scientific research.

Those who wish to access research data provided by the Research Data Centres of the Federal Statistical Office and the Statistical Offices of the federal states are still required to address their requests directly to the FDZ of the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg. However, researchers using official data now have the option to choose between the FDZ offices in Stuttgart and Mannheim.

“The fact that researchers are able to directly access official statistics ensures a high level of flexibility when addressing scientific questions. This kind of flexibility will benefit the quality of research projects,” says Minister of Science Theresia Bauer.

“The new branch office established by the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg at ZEW allows Mannheim and the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region to strengthen their profile as locations for scientific research. We would especially like to thank Theresia Bauer, who has long been committed to implementing this measure,” says ZEW Director Thomas Kohl.

In comparison to other access options, the workplace for visiting researchers has the advantage that it provides for greater flexibility whilst ensuring high-quality data analysis. Thanks to its central location and close proximity to public transportation, the new branch office at ZEW in Mannheim is an attractive alternative to the location in Stuttgart for many researchers from the fields of economics and social sciences.

Employees from the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg also provide on-site support for data users at ZEW. After a pilot phase of two years, the new FDZ branch office at ZEW will be assessed in terms of its efficiency.
