ZEW and University of Mannheim Receive 1.7 Million Euros for Joint Tax Research

The Leibniz ScienceCampus “Mannheim Taxation” (MaTax), a joint science project of the ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research, Mannheim, and the University of Mannheim, will receive 1.1 million euros in research funding from the Leibniz Association over a period of four years. This research grant was approved by the Senate of the Leibniz Association at the beginning of April 2019. In addition, the State of Baden-Württemberg will support the ScienceCampus with 0.6 million euros. During the same period, the University of Mannheim and the ZEW will invest a further 2.4 million euros in tax research carried out within the framework of MaTax.

“Since its establishment in 2014, MaTax has managed to bring together the smartest minds in economics, law and political science from the region as well as from Germany and abroad to tackle prevalent social issues in the field of tax research,” says MaTax spokesperson Professor Christoph Spengel, ZEW Research Associate and Chair of Business Administration and Taxation II at the University of Mannheim. “MaTax is a success story. The research grant MaTax managed to secure in this competitive environment is a reward for the work conducted by the researchers of the ScienceCampus,” says ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.

In the new funding phase, research at the ScienceCampus will focus on

1. taxation, innovation, digitisation and growth,
2. tax avoidance and evasion,
3. tax incidence and (re)distribution, and
4. European fiscal policy.
