LECTURER
David A. Jaeger, University of St. Andrews
Course Type: elective
Credits: 5 ECTS
Grading and assignment of ECTS credits:
At the conclusion of the course, students will write an 8 to 10 page research proposal to estimate a causal effect using one of the methods discussed in class.
SCHEDULE
Date of the Course: June 17 – 20, 2024
PREREQUISITES
All first year CDSE or equivalent courses.
COURSE CONTENT
This course is focused on estimating causal effects in applied microeconomic research questions. It discusses methods that, under the right circumstances, can plausibly be interpreted as producing estimates that are free from the effects of confounding influences on the outcome in question. These include random assignment, propensity score matching, instrumental variables, difference-in-differences, synthetic controls, and regression discontinuity designs.
Students will be responsible for discussing in class papers that employ the methods above.
COMPETENCES ACQUIRED
Students are to become sufficiently familiar with these causal inference methods to be able to apply them in their own research, as well as to be able to evaluate the quality of others‘ research that uses these methods.
FURTHER INFORMATION (LITERATURE AND RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS)
The backbone of the course is Mostly Harmless Econometrics by Joshua Angrist and Jörn-Stefen Pischke. Several articles from the literature will also be assigned for each course session.
