Dates and NewsAchim Wambach’s Term of Office in the German Monopolies Commission Comes to an End
Professor Achim Wambach, president of ZEW Mannheim, is leaving the German Monopolies Commission after two terms of office. He was a member of the commission from July 2014 to June 2022 and its chairman from March 2016 to September 2020. The federal government appointed Professor Tomaso Duso as his successor. Wambach was particularly involved in the further development and critical monitoring of competition among online platforms, in the areas of energy and health, as well as on the topic of distortions of competition in international trade, including in China.
“During my eight years at the Monopolies Commission, we intensively sought to strike the economically most beneficial balance between competition and state regulation in various sectors. ZEW research results, for example on market design and digital markets, have proven to be very helpful in this regard. The Monopolies Commission’s work in turn has given ZEW important impulses for research. Newly gained insights have been included in the work of ZEW’s research units. For example, the Monopolies Commission’s statements on health care markets led to the expansion of health economics research at ZEW,” says Professor Achim Wambach.
“I would like to thank all members of the commission and the whole team at the staff office for their fruitful cooperation.” The Monopolies Commission advises the German government and the legislative bodies in the fields of competition policy, competition law and regulation.
