Personnel

Dr. Tabea Bucher-Koenen is leading the ZEW-Research Department "International Finance and Financial Management".

As of mid-September 2019, Tabea Bucher-Koenen has accepted the position of Professor for Financial Markets at the University of Mannheim’s Business School. Professor Bucher-Koenen’s appointment, who since January 2019 has been head of the Research Department for “International Finance and Financial Management” at the ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim, will deepen the cooperation between ZEW and the University of Mannheim.

“I’m very glad to accept this position at the University of Mannheim,” says Tabea Bucher-Koenen. “The combination of policy-oriented empirical economic research at ZEW with the expertise stemming from the University of Mannheim’s strong focus on business and economics naturally lends itself to my ongoing research projects.”

ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach adds: “With the appointment of Tabea Bucher-Koenen, we are intensifying our close dialogue with the University of Mannheim in the fields of pension provisions, social policy, and financial literacy, all of which are highly relevant for the future.”

Professor Bucher-Koenen’s research focuses on household finance, the economics of ageing, and demographic change, with a special emphasis on private and public pension schemes. Her most recent publications are on individual savings behaviour, insurance decisions, and the role of financial literacy and information for long-term saving choices.

Bucher-Koenen earned her PhD at the University of Mannheim’s School of Law and Economics in 2010 and, upon completion, worked as a guest researcher at Dartmouth College in the USA. She then headed the Research Unit for Health and Life at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy from 2011 to 2014, and afterwards the Research Unit for Pensions and Social Policy from 2014 to 2018 before transferring to ZEW in Mannheim in January 2019.
