Changing Tasks and the Demand for Further Education in the Digital Transformation
As a result of the fourth industrial revolution, the economy is increasingly becoming digitized and automated. In particular, the linkage between IT and business processes (Industry 4.0) provides firms with ever new applications and sales opportunities. The technological advances are thereby changing the labor market in a direction where new machines and algorithms are gaining importance (Work 4.0). Technologies thereby not only allow automating assembly line workers or similar routine jobs, but increasingly also allows performing non-routine tasks that until now were thought to be left to humans. Such changes imply that workers need to adjust in terms of further education and training which is particularly true for low-skilled workers. Aim of the project is to analyze firms’ training practices against the background of changing work processes and task content. The results of the study shall inform whether firms are adjusting to technological changes by, for instance, training employees the necessary skills required for further employment in the firm.
