Effects of school choice

Effects of school choice

Period: 01.01.2010 – 31.12.2013

In this project, we will evaluate how the introduction of free school choice in Sweden in 1992 has affected students’ results. Has school choice and competition between schools increased average student achievement in Sweden? And if so, is there a gain for all students through better quality in all schools, and through a better match between students and schools? Or are there also losers from school choice? Is there also an effect on labour market outcomes, health outcomes and personality in adulthood? These are questions that we aim at answering in this project. They are politically relevant, both in assessing the Swedish experience as well as in serving as a basis for decision-making for politicians in other countries. The analysis will be based on different register datasets held at Statistics Sweden, including the Swedish school register, information on students’ and schools’ addresses and students’ outcomes in school and later in life.
