Indicator Report on Germany's Technological Performance
In this project, ZEW collects and analyses a set of indicators on innovation and start-up activity that serves the annual review on Germany’s performance in research and innovation which is prepared by the Expert Committee on Research and Innovation (EFI). Innovation indicators are primarily taken from the Community Innovation Surveys (CIS) and comparable efforts in non-European countries. In addition to a set of core indicators on inputs, organisation and outputs of innovative processes, the work in 2011 focuses on the effects of the 2008/09 economic crisis on innovation activities and how firms’ innovation strategies during the crisis affect firm performance in the early phase of economic upswing. Indicators on start-up activities investigate the development on new firm entries across sectors and countries with a particular focus on knowledge-intensive sectors. We also look at firm exits and the dynamics of the stock of firms. A special theme for the 2011 work is financing conditions of young enterprises.
