On January 1, 2015, Germany introduced a statutory minimum wage of € 8.50 per hour. As the generally positive employment trend in Germany changed little in 2015, proponents of the minimum wage draw a positive conclusion and criticize those economists who had predicted negative effects of the statutory minimum wage on the German economy. However, as pointed out by the German Council of Economic Experts (2015), such negative effects might still  occur over a longer period of time and may not be restricted to direct employment effects. This project aims to survey the existing (early) empirical evidence for Germany as well as the theoretical literature and the experience from other countries concerning the possible indirect and long-run effects of the minimum wage.
