Research Network for the Development of New Methods in Energy System Modelling (4NEMO)

The dynamics of the European energy system is increasingly being shaped by regulatory interventions, the expansion of renewable energies and the interaction between all players of society. The broad range of methods and orientations of existing energy models reflects this development. Still, these models’ ability to illustrate the challenges of the system transformation is often limited. Frequently, uncertainties, socio-economic factors and also the interplay of the energy sectors are only rudimentarily considered. Against this background, the project pursues two main goals:1) The project aims at improving the integration of economic and social factors and reducing the forms of uncertainties in energy models related to it. To this end, the energy models of the project partners will be further developed in a coordinated way.2) The second goal consists in increasing the coherence, comparability and transparency of the models. Carrying out systemic comparisons of models and analyses, using scenarios derived in the project, increases the understanding of the advantages specialized models offer. On the whole, the project aims to contribute to improving the validity, interpretability and comparability of political analyses using energy models.
