Seventh MaCCI Law and Economics Conference on Big Data at ZEW

Professor Drexl delivering his keynote on the future legal framework of the data economy.

On 6 and 7 November 2017, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim hosted the seventh MaCCI Law and Economics Conference on Big Data. The roughly 65 participants from academia, governmental organizations, and private companies discussed recent developments relating to big data and other topics in the field of law and economics.

In his keynote speech, Professor Josef Drexl from the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition (MPI) in Munich presented his view on the future legal framework of the data economy, emphasising the aims of competition and innovation. Alice Hutchings, PhD, Senior Research Associate at the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, who established and maintains a database of computer crime events in the United Kingdom, provided insights into how criminals displace and abuse big data. Furthermore, four panels with established experts in the field engaged in spirited debate on a number of topics, including the future of data markets, privacy and the protection of personal data, sector-specific regulation and personal data, as well as competition policy and big data.

Leibniz ScienceCampus Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI)

The Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI), funded by the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Leibniz Association, promotes the exchange of knowledge and insights between researchers from the fields of law and economy and thus provides fresh ideas related to competition policy, regulation, and innovation. MaCCI is a joint project of ZEW and the School of Law and Economics at the University of Mannheim. Core topics analysed by MaCCI include vertical competition restraints, abuse of market power, merger control, public and private enforcement of competition law, regulations in the telecommunications and energy market, as well as competition in the health sector.
