What Progress Have Economists Made in Evaluating Environmental Policy?

A group of economists from ZEW’s “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management” Research Department travelled to Venice from 30 June to 6 July 2019 to attend this year’s summer school of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) on “Econometric Approaches for Environmental Policy Evaluation”.
The aim of the summer school 2019 was to present current methods and topics from economic environmental research. Among other things, the junior researchers learned about best practices for the valuation of environmental amenities using housing markets; how to quantify the effects of environmental policy on health and education outcomes; and how to assess the economic impact of climate change.
The summer school was mainly organised by ZEW Research Professor Wolfram Schlenker from Columbia University. Together with Assistant Professor Meredith Fowlie from the University of California at Berkeley, ZEW economist Kathrine von Graevenitz, Ph.D., Assistant Professor Peter Nilsson from the Institute of International Economics in Stockholm and ZEW Research Associate Professor Ulrich Wagner from the University of Mannheim, he put together an intensive five-day programme of lectures and student talks. During the summer school, ZEW economist Robert Germeshausen was honoured as one of five award winners for his paper on the amendment to the German subsidy scheme for photovoltaic installations.
About the EAERE summer school
The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) is an international association for environmental and resource economics with approximately 1,200 members in 60 European and non-European countries. EAERE, in collaboration with Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and Venice International University (VIU), has been organising a summer school on a different topic for young researchers almost every year since 2001. Out of more than 100 applications for this year’s summer school, 18 young researchers were selected for the event in Venice. The lecturers briefly talk about their contributions in short video spots.
