The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) contributed actively to the 2017 Annual Conference of the Verein für Socialpolitik (VfS, German Economic Association) held at the University of Vienna from 3 to 6 September, with ZEW researchers providing a total of 18 presentations. In addition to the presentations, ZEW also hosted an information stand at the conference site, which offered VfS participants the opportunity to catch up on research, publications, events, and career possibilities at ZEW. This year’s conference, which gathered around 800 participants, focused on the core topic Alternative Structures for Money and Banking.

In their presentations, ZEW researchers discussed, among other things, which rules can prevent corruption in public procurement, whether ICT-intensive companies are more resilient in times of crisis than other companies, and how recessions affect employment in startups. During a panel discussion organised by the German Data Forum, ZEW economist Dr. Martin Hud presented the range of research data offered at ZEW, and particularly focused on the ZEW Business Survey in the Information Economy and the Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP).

The VfS counts around 4,000 personal and institutional members, which makes it one of the largest associations of economists in Europe. In January 2017, ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach took over the position as Chairman of the VfS for two years.
