Quo Vadis? – RWE Boss Schmitz to Discuss Germany’s Energy Transition at ZEW

The energy transition represents a unique opportunity for Germany. What have we achieved so far? Where do we go from here? What sort of framework must the next German government create to guarantee the success of the transition to renewable energy? These are the questions that Dr. Rolf Martin Schmitz, CEO of RWE AG, will be addressing in a talk taking place at 6 p.m. on 20 February 2018 at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). The talk is part of the institute’s lecture series “First-Hand Information on Economic Policy”.

As the coalitions talks surrounding both Germany’s “Grand Coalition” and the collapsed “Jamaica Coalition”, as well as the UN Climate Change Conference held in Bonn at the end of last year showed, the “energy transition”, the sustainable reconstruction of Germany’s energy supply, is no longer a matter for the distant future, but rather an issue to be dealt with in the present.

The question of what Germany’s future climate and energy policy should look like has become a prime topic of debate, figuring particularly heavily in recent coalition talks. In his lecture, Dr. Schmitz will lay out his perspective on the energy transition and provide an overview of the hurdles Germany has already overcome on the way to meeting its climate targets for 2020. He will also address the challenges facing the future German government in terms of climate and energy policy. Afterwards, audience members will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Schmitz questions.
