The ZEW Annual Report 2022, centred on the theme “Zeitenwende”, is now available. The publication delves into the institute’s research on this thematic focus including EU-wide natural gas procurement, inflation control, and the integration of migrants into the labour market. In addition, readers can discover the most noteworthy activities of the institute over the past year.
“Russia’s war against Ukraine has fundamentally challenged our shared values of security, peace, and freedom in Europe. To compound this, we also became acutely aware of Germany’s problematic dependence on energy and raw materials from third countries when faced with skyrocketing prices, inflation, and supply chain disruptions last spring. I am very pleased that we can contribute to overcoming these challenges with our work,” says ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.
Back to Office
ZEW’s 2022 was not only marked by the institute’s research endeavours but also the return of employees to the office after an extended period of pandemic-related remote work. The institute again had the honour of welcoming distinguished guests, including Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Danyal Bayaz, Chair of the Council of Economic Experts, Professor Monika Schnitzer, and Lufthansa CEO, Carsten Spohr, for its lecture series, “First-Hand Information on Economic Policy”. In addition, the Alumni Day at ZEW was successfully resumed after years of pandemic-induced suspension.
“Returning to the institute allowed us to resume in-person interactions, host on-site conferences and public events, and welcome back our guests. Moreover, the past year was marked by the preparation for the Leibniz Association’s evaluation, which required the tireless effort of the entire team. I would like to expresses my gratitude to all employees for their remarkable work performance and unwavering dedication,” stresses ZEW’s Managing Director, Thomas Kohl.
ZEW further strengthened its research profile
ZEW had a lot of positive developments on the scientific front as well. The establishment of the Research Group “Health Care Markets and Health Policy” is a significant expansion of the institute’s research profile in a highly relevant area. The aim is to better understand the economic prerequisites for good health care and to anchor health economics research more firmly in Germany. With Professor Nicolas Ziebarth, the institute gained an internationally renowned researcher from Cornell University as the new head of the ZEW’s “Labour Markets and Social Insurance” Unit. The activities of the institute’s renowned female researchers in policy advising were also significant: Professor Irene Bertschek was appointed to Chancellor Scholz’s “Future Council” and serves as the deputy chair of the Commission of Experts for Research and Innovation (EFI). Professor Melanie Arntz has been a member of the “Rat der Arbeitswelt” (“Council of the Working World”) of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs since 2022. Professor Tabea Bucher-Koenen provides expert advice to the federal government and the Federal Ministry of Finance as a member of the focus group on private pension provision.
Annual report allows a look behind the scenes
ZEW employees also have their say in the new annual report, showcasing their individual contributions through testimonials. These include unique projects and activities, such as the resilience courses offered to doctoral students at ZEW, which promote mental health and well-being, as well as the new ZEW Hub for field experiments.
