2013 ZEW Annual Report Published: An Eventful Year at ZEW
ZEW Annual ReportThe year 2013 was characterised by a sound development but also by major progress at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). The research institute has continued its positive development. By the end of the year, the number of employees has grown by nine to 191 members of staff, 130 of whom are involved in research. ZEW stood its ground in international competition by generating total revenues of approximately EUR 18.8 million, EUR 8.5 million of which were secured through third-party funding. Most notable in the year under report was the change of presidency at ZEW from Professor Wolfgang Franz to Professor Clemens Fuest.
One of the first innovations under the new presidency was the establishment of the "International Distribution and Redistribution" Research Group. "In the coming years, this Research Group will examine the development of income distribution, further wealth indicators, and redistribution issues against the backdrop of the growing gap between rich and poor," explains Fuest.
ZEW was also able to strengthen its international network in 2013. Signing a partnership agreement with Fudan University in Shanghai, one of China's leading universities, ZEW took another step in deepening its excellent cooperation with Chinese research institutes. "Our long-standing partnerships with universities and research institutes in Germany, Europe and the United States continue to be cornerstones of our international network," says Thomas Kohl, Director of Business and Administration at ZEW.
Another major innovation was the launch of the ZEW Research Data Centre. It grants external researchers access to high-quality, unique datasets compiled at ZEW.
In 2013, ZEW lived up to its claims to make a sustainable contribution to national and international knowledge diffusion in the scientific community and to qualify talented researchers. ZEW's research units organised some 40 scientific workshops and conferences. A total of eleven up-and-coming economists successfully completed their doctoral graduations. The high quality of ZEW’s research is also reflected in the appointments of ZEW researchers to professorships at German universities. In the year under report, experienced ZEW researchers accepted professorships at universities in Mannheim, Leipzig, Furtwangen and Heilbronn.
The overall scientific record of ZEW researchers in 2013 was not less impressive. They published 90 articles in renowned international academic journals, held 400 presentations at national and international workshops and conferences, and were involved in almost 250 research projects relevant to the scientific world and economic policy advice.
