Fighting child poverty in Germany requires both a sufficiently supportive infrastructure for families and effective financial support. In this project, we analyze possible reforms of the child supplement as well as different designs for a guaranteed child allowance. The project uses household-level data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) to study how these reforms would affect the distribution of disposable incomes and in particular the poverty rate and the entitlements to social assistance programmes. We also evaluate the fiscal effects of the measures.
