The Importance of the Chemical Industry for the German Innovation System

The Importance of the Chemical Industry for the German Innovation System

The aim of the study is to highlight the importance of innovative chemistry for the future viability of the German economy. Four aspects are examined:

  • Innovative strength of the German chemical industry
  • Innovation contributions of chemistry to solving social challenges
  • Leveraging chemical innovations in other industries
  • Framework conditions for an innovative chemical industry in Germany

Methodologically, the study is based on an indicator approach. Using key figures, the situation in chemistry is presented in a comparison over time, in comparison to other industries/technology fields and in an international comparison. The innovation contributions of chemistry are examined on the one hand using case studies and on the other hand using patent analyses.
