Eighth Mannheim Energy Conference at ZEW

On 6 and 7 May 2019, around 50 energy experts from Germany and abroad discussed current topics related to the energy industry at the eighth Mannheim Energy Conference at ZEW. Over the course of the two-day event, researchers and experts from companies and international organisations focused on carbon pricing, energy efficiency as well as the design of electricity markets with renewable energy generation. The conference was organised jointly by ZEW and the Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI).

The conference opened with an address by Professor Martin Kesternich, deputy head of the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management”. This year, the event featured various keynote speeches delivered by high-profile experts from the field of energy economics such as Professor Sebastian Rausch of ETH Zurich, Professor Frank Wolak of Stanford University, Professor Matthieu Glachant of MINES ParisTech and Dr. Karen Palmer of Resources for the Future. In their presentations, they dealt, among other things, with questions concerning the design of support policies for renewable energies to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the conference participants provided a comprehensive overview of the effects of environmental policy measures such as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme or energy taxes on firms’ behaviour, placing special emphasis on particular national carbon taxes. What is more, the participants also shed light on the decarbonisation measures, i.e. measures to emit lower amounts of carbon, for low-carbon mobility.

Eighth Energy Conference with great international resonance

In addition to the four keynote speeches, the conference featured a total of 33 cutting-edge contributions, which had been selected from more than 60 submissions by a scientific committee. While 40 per cent of the speakers were from Germany, more than half of them came from other European countries and around six per cent came from the United States or Canada. With a great number of high-quality scientific contributions, the conference was able to follow up on the success of the previous years and is considered one of the most renowned energy economics conferences in the world. What contributes further to the continuing popularity of the conference – apart from the quality of the contributions – are the numerous discussions and networking opportunities in a friendly atmosphere at ZEW after the event. With the aim of providing a platform for in-depth discussions on key aspects of the energy economy and its transformation, ZEW will again host the Mannheim Energy Conference in the upcoming year.
