On 14 and 15 May 2018, around 70 national and international energy experts attended the seventh Mannheim Energy Conference at ZEW. Over the course of the two-day event, researchers and experts from companies and international organisations discussed various topics related to the energy economy. Organised jointly by ZEW and the Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI), the conference focused particularly on topics like energy efficiency, energy innovations as well as CO2 emissions and emissions trading schemes.

The conference opened with an address by Dr. Sebastian Voigt, deputy head of the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management”. This year, the event featured various keynote speeches delivered by high-profile experts from the field of energy economics such as Professor Carolyn Fischer from Resources for the Future and VU Amsterdam, Assistant Professor Antoine Dechezleprêtre from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Dr. Sébastien Houde from the ETH Zurich, and Professor Valerie Karplus from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Amongst other issues, the speakers discussed issues related to the limits and challenges of expanding emissions trading schemes internationally. In addition, they provided a comprehensive overview of the EU emissions trading scheme, placing special emphasis on the possible ways of designing emissions trading systems as well as on their impact on the economic performance of firms. What is more, the participants also shed light on the interactions between inconsistencies in consumer preferences and energy efficiency measures.

Energy Conference with a high international reputation

In addition to the four keynote speeches, the conference featured a total of 36 cutting-edge contributions, which had been selected from more than 60 submissions by a scientific committee. While half of the speakers were from Germany, one third of them came from other European countries and around 15 per cent came from the United States. With a great number of high-quality scientific contributions, the conference was able to follow up on the success of the previous years and is considered one of the most renowned energy economics conferences in the world. What contributes further to the continuing popularity of the conference – apart from the quality of the contributions – are the numerous discussions and networking opportunities in a friendly atmosphere at ZEW after the event. With the aim of providing a platform for in-depth discussions on key aspects of the energy economy and its transformation, ZEW will again host the Mannheim Energy Conference in the upcoming year.

Leibniz ScienceCampus Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation

The Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation (MaCCI), funded by the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Leibniz Association, promotes the exchange between researchers from the fields of law and economics, and thus provides fresh impetus in terms of competition policy, regulation, and innovation. MaCCI is a joint project of ZEW and the School of Law and Economics at the University of Mannheim. Core topics analysed by MaCCI include vertical competition restraints, abuse of market power, merger control, public and private enforcement of competition law, regulations in the telecommunications and energy market, as well as competition in the health sector.
