ZEW Sails into the World of Artificial Intelligence on the MS Wissenschaft
Dates and NewsOn 11 July 2019, the exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft anchored in Bonn on the Stresemannufer in the context of the Science Year 2019. In the early evening, visitors were invited to take a tour of the exhibition on the topic of artificial intelligence. ZEW digital economist Janna Axenbeck was also on board presenting the touch-screen exhibit “Wie Künstliche Intelligenz Sprache und die Welt verstehen lernt” (“How Artificial Intelligence Learns to Understand Language and the World”) during a “Meet the Scientist” event.
The participating ZEW team created this interactive exhibit displayed on board of the MS Wissenschaft to give visitors the opportunity to get to known about the research conducted at ZEW. During a “Meet the Scientist” event, ZEW digital economist Janna Axenbeck provided first-hand information on the backgrounds, challenges and goals of working with artificial intelligence (AI): “With the floating Science Center, we have the opportunity to present our work with AI and neural networks directly at the exhibition. This way, we contribute to the fact that digitalisation and AI are not only perceived as a challenge or a risks, but rather as an opportunity. It was great to see how interested the visitors are in the exhibit and the work we do at ZEW”, says economist Janna Axenbeck.

Intelligent machines are on the advance almost in every sphere of day-to-day life and their fields of application and possibilities are manifold, ranging from industry and medicine to research. The ZEW exhibit on board the MS Wissenschaft will provide visitors with insights into how artificial intelligence works in this particular field, how neural networks learn to understand texts, and what opportunities this entails for economic research.
MS Wissenschaft on tour to Mannheim
The MS Wissenschaft will also be anchored in Mannheim on the Rhine Promenade in Lindenhof from 2 to 5 September 2019. The floating exhibition, an initiative organised by Wissenschaft im Dialog (Science in Dialogue, WiD) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, will visit cities along the German waterways before heading into Austria. The exhibition on board offers a fun and interactive way for guests to gain insights into this fascinating topic through various exhibits, providing an overview of where research is conducted in Germany on and with artificial intelligence. The exhibition is suitable for ages 12 and over. Entry to the exhibition is free. The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
