“On your bikes – ready – go!” Once again this year, employees of ZEW Mannheim participated in the “City Cycling – Cycling for a Better Climate” campaign. The event, organised by the City of Mannheim in collaboration with the state of Baden-Württemberg, took place from 7 to 27 May. The goal was to pedal as many CO2-free kilometres as possible, whether for work or leisure. With great enthusiasm, the ZEW team saved approximately 427 kilograms of CO2, contributing to sustainability.
“I appreciate initiatives that promote sustainable mobility. What I particularly like about it is the element of fun and the sense of community, knowing that others are enjoying themselves too,” says Anna Straubinger, an economist at ZEW, explaining her motivation to participate. Sabrina Petruck, her colleague and the driving force behind the campaign at ZEW, adds, “City Cycling has become a bit of a tradition at ZEW. It’s a win-win situation where we help the environment, while contributing to our own well-being. It’s a great feeling to start the day with enthusiasm and make a personal, albeit small, contribution to the energy transition.”
For the past five years, the ZEW team has been participating in City Cycling. This, along with the introduction of company bicycles and automatic water taps, is among the initiatives implemented as part of ZEW’s WIN Charta sustainability strategy. Under this strategy, ZEW takes on economic, social, and environmental responsibility, actively driving the conservation of resources.
About “City Cycling”
Fifteen years ago, the Climate Alliance, a collective of around 2,000 municipalities, NGOs, and other organisations from 25 European countries, introduced the concept of City Cycling. The objective of the Climate Alliance is to actively tackle climate change on a local level. Encouraging sustainable mobility, this campaign provides countries and communities with a straightforward approach. Throughout the three-week event, teams are urged to pedal as many CO2-free kilometres as they can.
