ZEW School Teams Impress at the YES! Southwest Regional Final 2024

Participating school teams at the YES! Southwest Regional Final in front of ZEW Mannheim.

On 25 June 2024, a hot summer’s day, more than 60 teens and their teachers gathered at ZEW Mannheim for the YES! school competition. Participating in the annual Southwest Regional Final, they passionately debated the future of the world of work, educational inequality, mobility transition, biodiversity, financial markets and the future of the German trade model. Two teams mentored by ZEW won the regional preliminary round, thus qualifying for the final in Hamburg in September 2024.

The competition was based on the topic “Verkehrswende im Autoland – wie kann nachhaltige Mobilität gelingen?” (“Mobility transition in the land of the car – how can we achieve sustainable mobility?”, link in German), developed by ZEW researchers Dr. Anna Straubinger and Tim Kalmey. The Albertus Magnus Gymnasium from Stuttgart and the Carl Benz Gymnasium from Ladenburg came out on top.

The Albertus Magnus Gymnasium from Stuttgart developed the concept for an app called “Go 4 Green”, which rewards decisions that users make that promote sustainable mobility. The Carl Benz Gymnasium from Ladenburg developed a transportation concept called “Urban Paradise – Fahrrad, Leben, Stadt” (Urban Paradise – Bicycle, Life, City). The team argued that a systemic shift towards more bicycle transportation can only be achieved through the combined implementation of push and pull factors. Therefore, their solution contains both. They proposed the implementation of a sector system in city centres as a push factor. This would minimise search and through traffic in downtown streets, since moving between different sectors by car would only be permitted via a bypass road. Their proposed pull factor is a bicycle promotion programme that would include building more car parks, designating more streets for bicycle traffic and facilitating a higher density of rental bikes and repair stations.

Congratulations to the winning teams! ZEW wishes the best of luck to all teams for the grand final in Hamburg in September. There, both Southwest regional finalists will compete with the winners of the other regional finals.
