Cycling for the Climate – ZEW Team Participates in Environmental Awareness Campaign
Dates and NewsFrom 23 June to 13 July 2018, ZEW employees took part in the campaign “City Cycling – Cycling for a Better Climate” organised by the city of Mannheim in collaboration with the state of Baden-Württemberg. The goal of the initiative, which is carried out on an annual basis, is to promote climate protection whilst encouraging people to take up cycling in a fun way. In the past three weeks, those participating in the campaign have tried to clock up as many CO2-free kilometres as possible in their daily commutes or other journeys. Over the past weeks, the ZEW team was able to save around 770 kilograms of CO2, contributing to a more sustainable future in an active way.
The city cycling campaign is in keeping with the objectives of the WIN Charter signed by ZEW in December 2017, in which the institute committed to taking greater responsibility for the economic, ecological and social impact of its activities. So far, ZEW has carried out a number of projects and strongly promoted the careful use of resources, energy and emissions. In addition to the acquisition of company bicycles and eco-friendly business trips, the institute now aims to further contribute to a more sustainable approach to our environment through the city cycling campaign. Apart from reducing CO2 levels, cycling also allows workers to shape their working life in a more active way – thus fostering a better team environment at the workplace. “The city cycling campaign is a great opportunity to do something good that will bring benefit to us and the environment. Every single kilometre contributes to a better climate,” says Sabrina Petruck, who initiated ZEW’s participation in the campaign.
About “City Cycling”
In 2008, the Climate Alliance launched the city cycling campaign to encourage people to take up cycling on an everyday basis. The initiative has been offering local authorities a proven method that is easy to implement in order to increase sustainable mobility. The goal of the teams participating in the campaign is to achieve as many CO2-free kilometres as possible by bike within three weeks. The experiences made by the different teams can then be used to improve cycling infrastructure in cities.
