The new seminar programme of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has recently been published. From September 2011 until June 2012, ZEW offers numerous expert seminars on current issues and questions for specialists and executives. With over 40 events per year, the ZEW expert seminars cover a wide range of topics, including econometrics, financial market analysis and management, business management and organisation.

Popular classics offered by ZEW include the German "Qualifizierungsprogramm Ökonometrie" (Qualification Programme for Econometrics), which aims at providing practical and sound knowledge in the field of econometrics, as well as expert seminars on economic analysis. Numerous seminars also deal with current issues, such as the international deployment of employees, copyright issues regarding digital literature or the economics of competition. Additionally, the programme includes a new expert seminar entitled "Evaluation von Programmen und Maßnahmen" ("Evaluation of Programmes and Measures"), providing knowledge on evaluation methods for impact analysis of measures and programmes in economy and in politics. Another new expert seminar covers the topic "Social Software im Unternehmen" ("Social Software in Companies"). During an evening event, participants will obtain information on the possibilities of strategically employing social software, such as intranets, in companies. The topics of this seminar will be illustrated by best practice examples and actively discussed among the participants.

Being jointly organised and held by ZEW researchers and experienced practitioners is a distinguishing feature of the ZEW expert seminars. This ensures the combination of current research findings with professional experience. ZEW is the only German research institute offering seminars of this type. Furthermore, the ZEW Seminar Programme encompasses custom-tailored in-house qualification measures for firms and institutions in English and German. These not only include seminars on economic issues but also training to improve presentation, communication and negotiation skills as well as coaching and additional soft skill courses.

The topics covered by the Seminar Programme are of great importance for the long term success of companies in national and global competition. Thomas Kohl, Director of Business and Administration of ZEW, emphasises this aspect: “Continuous training of staff and a well-established learning culture are key factors in determining a company’s success.” ZEW’s high-quality training programme, which has received top feedback from its participants, can contribute to these key elements.
