Big Data Analyses and New Developments in Research Data Centres (RDC)

Workshop

On 24 and 25 November 2022, a workshop on “Big Data Analyses and New Developments in Research Data Centres” will take place at ZEW. The workshop is organised by IAB, ifo and ZEW as well as the associated research data centres: IAB-FDZ, EBDC (ifo) and ZEW-FDZ (including BERD@NFDI).

The aim of the workshop is to give economists the opportunity to exchange ideas on new types of data and new developments in data use. This includes the following aspects:

  • Big data analyses: Use of unstructured data – from the internet (web scraping), social media, measurement data and other big data – by converting it into structured research data
  • Generation of research data by linking administrative and/or survey data, e.g. via machine learning algorithms
  • Innovative data access paths in RDCs: e.g. FDZ-in-FDZ, remote access, cloud
Venue

ZEW – Leibniz-Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung

On the one hand, the presentations of the workshop will address methodological topics. On the other hand, it will be presented which research topics are now being addressed with new (types of big) data that could not be empirically investigated before. Furthermore, legal problems in dealing with publicly available data and administrative data will be discussed (e.g. GDPR and copyright).

A panel discussion on the topic of “Innovative Ways of Accessing Data” with representatives of research data centres (in the NFDI network KonsortSWD) and data users will explore how legal requirements, technical restrictions and the wishes of researchers can be reconciled.

IAB, ifo and ZEW invite researchers to contribute papers from all areas of empirical economic research that are related to the topics of this workshop, e.g. the use of unstructured data in the context of a research project. Papers on methodological aspects are welcome as well as papers that offer suggestions for future data generation or collection.

The workshop is scheduled as an in-person-only event, but – depending on the pandemic situation – may also be held online if necessary.

The main language of the workshop will be German. However, lectures and discussions may be held in English if desired.
