Easy Read Information on Accessibility

This information is for the website www.zew.de.
This website is from ZEW Mannheim.

ZEW is short for our institute’s German name:
Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung
The full name of ZEW in English is:
ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research.

What is accessibility?

Accessibility means
that all people have access to something.
For example: websites.
Or an entrance to a house.

All people should be able to have access to things.
For example:
Blind people cannot see websites.
If the website is accessible,
they can have the web pages read out to them.

There is a law for accessibility in German.
The law is called:
Act on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.

ZEW wants everything on the website to be accessible.
There should be no barriers for people.

That‘s why ZEW is making this website accessible.
This is not always easy.
Unfortunately, there are still barriers.
You can find out which barriers there are
in the accessibility statement.

We wrote the accessibility statement on 1 September 2022.
Experts reviewed the statement in November 2023.
They said:
Not all content is accessible.
There are still barriers
that need to be included in the statement.
We have therefore updated the statement.

What barriers are there?

Here you can read which barriers still exist.

Description of images

Images on websites have a special image description.
This special image description is called alternative text.
Blind people have the alternative text read out to them.
That way they know what is in the images.
We have written alternative texts for almost all the images.
The alternative texts are still missing for some images.
We want to fix this quickly.

Video on the homepage

There is a video on the homepage.
The video is called: 30 years of ZEW.
Blind people cannot use the video.
The video needs a description for all
who cannot see the video.

Texts in images

There is text in images on the website.
Blind people cannot have this text read out to them.

Using the search function without a mouse

Some people use their computer without a mouse.
They use the keyboard on their computer
to navigate on the website.
For these people there is a problem with the search function:
Some parts of the search page are in the wrong order.

Lists

Lists on a website have a special structure.
They are organised in a special way.
This is important
because only this way lists can be read out well.
And because they are easier to understand.
Some lists lack this structure.

Labelling

Some things on websites can be clicked on.
These things need to have good names
so that everyone understands what they are there for.
Some things on the website are not well labelled.

Cookie banner

The cookie banner is the window
that appears over the page
when you open the page for the first time.
The banner is not accessible.

HTML error

HTML is a markup language.
All internet pages use HTML.
HTML has many rules.
This website violates some of these rules.
It is not accessible.

Sign language

There are no videos in sign language on the website yet.
Sign language is important for people
who have difficulty hearing.
Or when people have problems speaking.
These people then speak with their hands.
These people make signs with their hands.
This is why it is called sign language.
Websites should have videos
in which important things are explained in sign language.
We want to produce such videos soon.

Documents

The PDF files on the website are not barrier-free.
We are working on solving this problem.
