A Joyful Reunion
EventsA big ZEW alumni meetup
On 23 February 2024, dozens of alumni came together at ZEW Mannheim for the annual alumni gathering, an occasion marked by joy. This year’s Alumni Day was all about exchange:, with each Research Unit and Service Department holding its own individual meeting. Former ZEW employees had the chance not only to participate in an expert discussion or two, but also to share their anecdotes from the “good old days.”
“As a former Research Associate and alumnus, it’s such a treat for me to get to regularly return to ZEW and catch up with my former colleagues. I also get a lot of inspiration from talking to the newer members of the ZEW community. This is how we keep the connection alive,” summarised Martin Kesternich, former deputy head of the ZEW “Environmental and Climate Economics” Research Unit and current Professor of Economics. Kesternich primarily researches sustainability and is the spokesperson for the newly established Paderborn Research Centre for Sustainable Economy (PARSEC) at the University of Paderborn.
Kesternich’s recap of the event echoed the sentiments of many others. The event also provided a great opportunity for informal meetings and networking.
An inspiring occasion
The Alumni Day was not only a celebration of the past, but also a look into the future. Participants discussed the future challenges and opportunities of empirical economic research and exchanged ideas on how they can continue to contribute to excellence and innovation.
Overall, the Alumni Day was an inspiring occasion that both strengthened the bond between ZEW alumni and their former organisation and celebrated the many successes of the last 30 years.
Throughout the day, there was ample opportunity for cross divisional dialogue. After a shared meal, the Alumni Day transitioned into a farewell ceremony honouring ZEW’s Commercial Director Thomas Kohl. After 32 years at ZEW, Mr Kohl is now embarking on his very well-deserved retirement. Claudia von Schuttenbach took over the post on 1 March.
