Inequality and Public Policy

Effrosyni (Efi) Adamopoulou is Deputy Head of ZEW’s “Inequality and Public Policy” Research Group. She joined ZEW in September 2023. Her research explores inequality through both micro and macroeconomic lenses, focusing on how labour market institutions, household dynamics, and social interactions shape economic disparities. Her work on wage determination/collective bargaining and firm financing examines the structural forces driving income inequality, while her studies on household decision-making, consumption, and education highlight how individual choices and constraints contribute to economic disparities. She also investigates how early-life conditions and peer networks influence long-term socio-economic outcomes, reinforcing the persistent nature of inequality across generations.

Efi Adamopoulou received her PhD in Economics from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in 2013. Before joining ZEW, she was a researcher at the University of Mannheim, an external lecturer at the European Business School, and a (tenured) economist at the Bank of Italy. She was a member of the Greek National Minimum Wage Experts Committee from 2022 to 2025. Moreover, she has been an IZA Research Fellow since November 2021 and a member of the Bonn-Mannheim Collaborative Research Center TR 224 (funded by the German Research Foundation – DFG) since 2019. She was awarded the Seal of Excellence by the European Commission in 2020 and the Young Labour Economist Prize by the European Association of Labour Economists in 2012.
