Dr Thomas Wirth is a lawyer in charge of contract law matters at ZEW in Mannheim.
He studied law as well as modern and contemporary history at the universities of Fribourg and Lausanne/Switzerland. After passing the state law examinations and obtaining a doctorate as well as a master's degree in history, he began working as in-house counsel for Volkswagen AG in 1991, focusing on international distribution and cooperation agreements. After two years as assistant to the Chairman of the Board of Management and three years as in-house counsel at Volkswagen subsidiary Seat S.A. in Barcelona, Thomas Wirth took over responsibility for research and development contracts and scientific cooperation agreements at Volkswagen in 1999. In 2001, he moved to the Heidelberg-based biotech company LION Bioscience AG as Head of Legal and Patents.
Since 2003, Thomas Wirth has been working as a lawyer in Mannheim. His work focuses on international licensing and cooperation agreements, all kinds of distribution law matters as well as copyright, trademark and patent law. Since 2004, as a member of a network of experts, he has been advising the EU Commission on the drafting of a harmonised European contract law. He appears as a speaker at the ZEW expert seminars on copyright law as well as data protection law.
