ZEW Economist Zareh Asatryan Appointed as Professor

Empirical Economic Research at the University of Münster

Professor Asatryan’s current research activities are focussing on the political economy of welfare states and the design of tax and transfer systems in low-capacity environments.

In addition to his work at ZEW, Professor Zareh Asatryan has accepted a professorship in economics with a focus on empirical economic research at the University of Münster. The appointment of the economist and deputy head of ZEW’s Research Unit “Corporate Taxation and Public Finance” will intensify the exchange between ZEW Mannheim and the University of Münster.

“At the University of Münster I will have excellent opportunities to build on my work and further develop my research on public finance and political economy,” explains Professor Asatryan.

A recognised expert for tax and fiscal policy and very successful in his research on the interactions between taxes, political behaviours and economic development, Asatryan will be a valuable addition to the economics department of the University of Münster. About Professor Zareh Asatryan

Professor Asatryan’s current research activities are focussing on the political economy of welfare states and the design of tax and transfer systems in low-capacity environments. In addition, his research interests lie in the field of fiscal policy, especially in the countries of the Eurozone and the EU.

He was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Mannheim from 2017 to 2018 and earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Freiburg in 2015. Before that, he had completed his master’s degree in “Economics and Management Science” at Humboldt University of Berlin, following a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and statistics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is presently chairman of the Armenian Economic Association and board member of Armenia’s Economic Policy Council.
