The relationship between individual qualification and labour market success is analysed for women and men in France and Germany. Because on the one hand the educational systems and on the other hand the general conditions regarding the compatibility of family and work differ strongly between the two countries, the educational decisions and the employment behaviour of men and women are also expected to differ. A microeconometric analysis based on German and French individual data therefore sheds light on the determinants of education and employment in these countries and enables us to identify elements for a more efficient design of education and family policies in Germany.
