Financial literacy is a key skill in today's world. It influences individual prosperity, which in turn has an impact on the national economy. In view of the increasingly complex financial world and the growing need to take personal responsibility for one’s financial well-being, financial literacy is gaining in importance. But are the Germans well-versed in financial matters?

We have dedicated the latest edition of our ZEW Monthly to the topic of “Financial Literacy”, taking a close look at the Germans’ knowledge of financial issues. A study has shown that there are considerable gaps in financial knowledge in certain groups of the population. According to another study, the gender gap in financial literacy is partly due to women’s lower self-confidence in their financial skills. In this edition, we also present the MetaFin project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and will support and promote research on financial education in Germany.
