Innovation Indicator 2015 to 2018
"The 'Innovation Indicator' is an initiative that has been initiated by Deutsche Telekom Stiftung and Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (BDI) in 2005 and which has been continued as a joint activity of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) and BDI from 2015 on. The Innovation Indicator evaluates Germany’s innovation performance as well as the conditions for innovation and benchmarks Germany against the other industrial nations and emerging economies. The analyses enter into a country ranking of innovativeness. A special feature of the Innovation Indicator compared to other indicator-based country rankings is a novel approach for selecting indicators. Using a conceptual model that links input and output indicators, econometric analysis were performed in order to separate relevant from non-relevant indicators and to avoid redundancy among indicators. In addition to an indicator-based country ranking, the Innovation Indicator also analyses a variety of thematic areas. In 2015, for instance, the report analysed the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the German innovation system, with a particular focus on so-called Hidden Champions. The 2017 edition put a focus on digitalisation while in 2018, the openness of innovation systems was analysed in more detail.
