More Data and Fewer Concerns
EventsFirst-Hand Information on Economic Policy on Digitalisation in Germany
How can Germany’s digital infrastructure be made future-proof? Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, addressed this question during his visit to ZEW on 8 May 2024. Over 200 guests listened attentively to his speech and the subsequent discussion between the Minister and ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.
According to Wissing, data is the key, and obtaining it requires the digitalisation of analogue structures: “The introduction of the digital Germany ticket sparked strong reactions: ‘Why does the Minister need a digital ticket? A paper ticket is sufficient. It has served its purpose for 100 years.’ But to understand travel patterns from A to B, data is indispensable. There is also a demand among elderly people for improved timetables. We must ensure that we are generating usable data.”
The ensuing discussion also touched on rail transport and the extensive plans to renovate its infrastructure. Participants were particularly interested in the complete reconstruction of the line between Frankfurt and Mannheim, and followed the exchange with great interest on this thoroughly successful evening.
